National Priority Crime :
The Vehicle Crime Working Group
A section of the fourth working group, formed to address the partnership's five strategy priorities.
About the Group :
Inspector
Edward De La Rue, of Sussex Police, chairs this dedicated team. Six members,
from organisations such as West Sussex Fire & Rescue Services, Adur Council
Housing Office, Lancing Parish Council and Adur Watch, meet up every 6 to
8 weeks. The group instigate local initiatives aimed at reducing the number
of car crimes, from theft of, theft from, vehicle security and abandonment.
What is being progressed in 2005 :
Work is continuing on :
- Awareness campaigns throughout the district. They focus on the need for owners to leave their vehicles secure, with personal items correctly stored from sight giving offenders little encouragement to target the car.
- A link up with retailers selling car security systems. By linking into the national 'Car Crime Awareness' week it is hoped that retailers will sell discounted security systems, encouraging car owners to take valuable steps in protecting their cars against theft.
- Better signage in prominent places at large car parking areas, such as supermarkets, reminding owners to ensure that their car is left secure.
The
printing of the car crime awareness slogan, 'Lock it or Lose It', on the
reverse of all car park tickets issued throughout the district.- The integration of some of the security measures of the 'Safer Car Park Scheme' in Adur car parks, as and when they are refurbished.
- Regular reports in the local press and the 'Adur Outlook' publication, advising people on how to avoid being the target of car crime.
