Building Control
Dangerous structures
Local Authorities have a responsibility, under the Building Act 1984, to
deal with any structure, public or privately owned, that is judged to be
in a dangerous condition.
This is to protect the public's health and safety and particularly applies to buildings which have become unstable or dangerous either through accidental damage or lack of maintenance.
Where a building or structure is considered to be dangerous the Local Authority will carry out an inspection to assess whether action is required to make the situation safe.
If the building or structure poses a potential danger to the safety of the public, appropriate action will be considered to remove the danger. The Authority has the legal powers to require the owners of buildings or structures to remedy the defects or we may direct contractors to carry out works to make the building or structure safe, and charge for this service.
If you need to report a dangerous structure please contact the Building Control Team on (01273) 263222 during office hours or use the council's emergency number when the offices are closed.
Note : As from Monday 18th May 2009 following the formation of a partnership between Adur and Worthing the Building Control team will be relocating to Portland House in Worthing. The team will continue to deliver the Building Control Service within the Adur District but will now be supported by colleagues from the Worthing teams.
