Beach, sea and water safety : Beach bonfires
Beach bonfires are generally not permitted within the Adur District.
Following a number of incidents in 2007 damage has been caused to the sea defences and there is a potential danger to members of the public as a result of bonfires on the beach.
Permission may be granted provided applications are made at least five working days before the planned date of the bonfire and if the following criteria are adhered to :
- They need to be situated between the high and low water mark.
- They should be positioned well away from any beach huts.
- Adur District Council and Lancing Parish Council prefer the use of the recognised area designated specifically for bonfires, which is adjacent to the Church of the Good Shepherd on Shoreham Beach.
- The bonfire should consist of only wood, with paper and cardboard to ignite it.
- The area must be cleared and restored by the organiser following the event.
- The bonfire should be built within a time frame so as not to attract fly-tipping and to ensure you are aware of the materials that constitute the bonfire.
- Both Adur District Council and Lancing Parish Council (if holding the bonfire within their district boundary) will need to see a copy of your public indemnity insurance.
Applications should be sent at least five working days before the planned date of the bonfire to both :
- Peter Latham, Corporate Director, Adur District Council, Commerce Way,
Lancing, West Sussex, BN15 8TN
and - Richard Wickens, Lancing Parish Council, Parish Hall, South Street, Lancing, West Sussex. BN15 8AQ
