Alcohol and drugs support in Adur
I've
discovered my child is using drug, what should I do now?
Your first reaction is probably anger, fuelled by fear of what could happen, and possibly lack of knowledge about the effects and consequences. Try to stay calm, and think about what you are going to say when you confront your child.
If possible choose a suitable quiet time to talk to them, not when they are under the influence of any substances.
Encourage them to talk to you. Listen, and try not to interrupt.
Let them know you care, and offer support.
Help them to plan ways they can avoid taking drugs in the future. Look at alternative activities you can do together.
Remember they probably got the drugs from friends and acquaintances. The spectre of dealers hanging around the school gates is not usually a reality. They may need to build up new friendships. Talk to them about how they feel about this, and how they could achieve it.
Make sure your child knows it is their behaviour you are condemning, and not them.
Accept you may need help, and don't be ashamed to ask for it. The Young Peoples Substance Misuse service can be contacted on (01903) 230600, or see the contacts page.
