Adur and Worthing Communities Team

(Previously know as Community well-being)

New: Take the Neighbourhood Action Plan survey

The Adur and Worthing Communities Team is a diverse range of staff working with different communities in Adur and Worthing to tackle local community needs.  It does this by working in areas and with groups who need services most but may access them least.

Focusing the work of the team in areas of deprivation is crucial, particularly given the inequalities that exist within Adur and Worthing.

The team works closely with communities and a range of partner agencies, securing a range of external income to help bring inward investment (half of the team are funded through external funding brought into the councils) into Adur and Worthing.

The key functions of the team include:

The team is also involved in a variety of other programmes and initiatives, including:

  1. Leading safeguarding work for children and young people and vulnerable adults
  2. Working with other council departments to help secure investment for park equipment to enable free use for young people and families
  3. Working on a smoke-free parks initiative with local schools

Developing a garden sharing scheme, matching together those looking for space to garden and those who have space but can no longer maintain their gardens.

Connecting Communities

Managing the local partnership (Local Strategic Partnership) to bring agencies together and develop shared priorities (the joint Sustainable Community Strategy: Waves ahead) based on community need.

Working locally in neighbourhoods with residents and partners to create networks to help join groups up around important issues (e.g. employment and skills, reducing isolation all at grass roots level).

Working with communities to ensure local needs are identified and addressed through Neighbourhood Action plans.

Helping and encouraging communities to get along better together by working with a range of different minority, marginalised and disadvantaged groups.

Healthier Communities

Adur and Worthing Wellbeing Hubs improve health and wellbeing in communities.  They provide free friendly advice and support to residents to help them: get fitter, lose weight; eat well; stop smoking; drink sensibly; manage stress and get more active.  Programmes are being developed to address key issues: exercise schemes, activities for older people; health and wellbeing support for those out of work; early identification of cancer and workplace health.

Providing opportunities for more physical activity by working with or setting up voluntary groups to run their own programmes, improving access to activities for vulnerable groups, developing partnerships with schools to increase young people’s health and wellbeing, preventing anti-social behaviour by engaging young people in positive activities and developing outdoor exercise and play to increase activity levels and promote wellbeing.

Voluntary and Community sector

Adur District Council seeks to support an active and effective voluntary sector in Adur by working with them to deliver services in the local community.  This includes providing long-term funding to Adur Voluntary Action to provide support and development services to voluntary organisations and funding to the Citizens Advice Bureau.  Shorter-term grants are used to encourage the voluntary sector to assist in priority areas such as promoting health and wellbeing in the local community; promoting community involvement and volunteering opportunities, targeting inequalities and deprivation, increasing partnership working between organisations and promoting the regeneration of the district.
