Community well-being
The Community Well-being team form part of the 'Planning & Community Division' at Adur District Council.
Their remit is diverse ranging from community safety to culture, arts, sports and community development. All of their work aims to improve the 'quality of life' of the residents of Adur especially those in most need. Key to this aim is the 'empowerment' of local people so that they are able to identify needs and be actively involved in the sustainable solutions to address these.
An example of this work is the community project taking place in Southlands ward. Here a community group 'Southlanders' has been formed and they have made a real difference in their local neighbourhood. Building a new park, holding social events and providing free information to people. They are now in the process of setting up a community café and adult education classes locally and have just been awarded funding to appoint a project officer. See also the Southlanders webpage.
Much of the teams work is focussed in the district's most needy areas. Complex issues often exist in these areas including social, economic, educational and environmental factors. In order to tackle such a broad range of problems a partnership approach is paramount to the team. The team work closely with it's partners including Social and Caring Services, West Sussex Youth Service, the local Primary Care Trust, Sussex Police and voluntary sector organisations. The team provide advice and guidance to these partners on its areas of expertise.
The work of the team enables many national, regional and local targets to be met. Examples include meeting targets set in Adur's Community Strategy and the Local Area Agreements. Providing a means of turning rhetoric into reality.
If you would like to know more about the team and how you can work with them see the 'team structure diagram' attached.
