Council tax benefit and housing benefit :
Backdated claims or late claims
It is unusual for a Housing or Council Tax Benefit claim to be backdated, as the law states that a claim only starts from when an application is received in writing by the council.
If you want to make a late claim to Benefit, you will have to apply for 'Backdating' in writing. You will also have to prove continuous 'good cause' for your failure to make the claim on time. This means that you will have to provide a good reason for not claiming, for every day during this period. You will also need to confirm whether no one else could have helped you, e.g. partner, family member, etc. It will not be enough to simply prove that your income was low during this period.
For more information please see the contact us page.
Alternatively you can complete the on-line form below.
Note : this form can be filled out on screen, but then needs to be printed and signed before returning to the council.
