Overpayments (council tax benefit and housing benefit)
Council tax benefit and housing benefit overpayments occur when your benefit entitlement is revised. Overpayments are amounts of benefit which have been paid but to which there is no entitlement under the current regulations. Such overpayments are recoverable and could be liable for prosecution in some circumstances.
Avoid overpayments by telling the council if there is any change in your circumstances that could affect your benefit entitlement.
