Emergencies : Sunken vessel - Ice Prince

Shoreham Beach update
All of Shoreham Beach (ADC owned) was inspected in company with BMT and DRS during the morning of 11th February 2008 and found to be clear of wood associated with the Ice Prince. This beach is open to the public. The Local Nature Reserve (LNR) was inspected at the same time and no damage was found to the environment as a result of the recovery operation.
The picture below shows Shoreham Beach on the weekend of 19th January 2008 looking west to Worthing.

The picture below shows work in progress during the first week to move
wood from the low water mark to above the high water, again looking west
towards Worthing.
Note in the distance the large excavator used to move wood.

The picture below shows the amount of wood that was hand picked from the beach during the second week. All hand picked wood was placed in bags and carried to collection points for chipping

The picture below shows the start of the wood chipping operation during
the third week.
Over 100 tonnes of wood was reduced to chips and transported by lorry for
recycling in the first week of this operation.

The picture below shows Shoreham Beach looking west. Note the wheel tracks of heavy vehicles used to transport the wood along the beach to the collection point at Fort Haven.

What to do if you find any more wood or injured birds and wildlife
The MCA are keen to ensure that the recovery goes smoothly. They have issued information regarding the legalities of ownership of the cargo and the responsibility of anyone finding the cargo to report this to the Receiver of Wrecks or her duly appointed representative.
The council is closely monitoring the situation and is working closely with all partner agencies to ensure that any pollution issues that may arise are dealt with appropriately.

Q - What is the council doing to safeguard our beaches?
A - The council has robust emergency plans in place to deal with marine pollution
events and these have been implemented. We are also working closely with
the MCA and other partner agencies to coordinate our response in order to
ensure that all appropriate measures are taken to minimise the effects of
pollution on our beaches.
Q- What should I do if I find any dead birds or other wildlife?
A - Under current control measures that are in place any birds or wildlife
found dead should be reported immediately to the RSPCA on
their emergency number 0300 1234 999 who
will respond appropriately.
