Air pollution and air quality
We
aim to ensure that air pollution is minimised as far as reasonably possible
in the district. We investigate complaints regarding smoke, odour and dust
pollution. Where this type of pollution causes a statutory nuisance we take
action under the Environmental Protection Act 1990.
Should you wish to make a complaint, contact Environmental Support.
We regulate 30 larger industrial processes in the district that can or do emit substance to air through the Local Air Pollution Control regime. We inspect these premises on a regular basis.
Following on from the completion of the Review and Assessment of Air Quality at the end of December 2000, we carried out an Updating and Screening Assessment (USA) of Air Quality in May 2003. The conclusions of this USA meant that a further Detailed Assessment (DA) of Air Quality was carried out on certain parts of the District.
The findings of this DA, which was completed in October 2004, were that the Air Quality Objective for nitrogen dioxide was likely to be breached in two areas of Adur, namely High Street, Shoreham-by-Sea and Old Shoreham Road, Southwick, in the vicinity of Kingston Lane. This means that two Air Quality Management Areas (AQMA) will have to be declared and that the Council must develop an Action Plan aimed at reducing levels of nitrogen dioxide in these areas.
As part of this process, we are contacting designated statutory consultees and also requesting comments and views on the findings of the reports. You can find links to the documents below.
We continue to work on air quality issues, monitoring levels of air pollution at many locations throughout the district. We are working with the Sussex Air Quality Steering Group to try and develop a strategic approach across Sussex to ensure that the air we breathe is as safe as reasonably possible.
Air Quality Action Plan
An integral part of the Air Quality Management process is the improvement of air quality in those areas where the objectives have been, or are likely to be breached. Where AQMAs have been declared, the local authority must produce an Action Plan which sets out their options for working towards improving the air quality. Adur District Council has combined this Action Plan with the Further Assessment required by the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA). If you have any comments or contributions, then please contact the Domestic & Pollution Team.
