Ruinous and dilapidated buildings
Buildings that are not maintained and kept in repair will, over time deteriorate. This is particularly the case with buildings that are left empty for any length of time, which may also be affected by vandalism or fire damage. In extreme cases the building can become a blight on the neighbourhood.
The council has powers to serve a notice on the owner requiring them to either demolish the building and clear the site or to repair the building to a reasonable standard. If the owner fails to comply with the notice then subject to any appeal by the owner the council may carry out the work in default and recover the costs.
