Smokefree Adur
Free drop-in smoking cessation clinics (for details see below)
![]()
Adur,
along with the rest of England, is now smokefree. Smoking in most enclosed
public places and work places is now prohibited. The legislation has resulted
in a healthier environment for people to socialise in, with much improved
air quality within pubs, restaurants and other places of leisure, as well
as work places free from second-hand smoke.
The introduction of this legislation has been very successful with the council receiving very few complaints of people smoking. It’s proved to be a popular law with non-smokers and, surprisingly, many smokers are saying they are enjoying the atmosphere in bars now, as well as encouraging them to smoke less.
The
Smokefree Implementation Officer has been going round the district checking
that people are not smoking inside and that businesses display the correct ‘No
Smoking’ signs. A few companies were unaware that they have to display
these signs and these businesses have been handed signs at the time of their
inspection.
The Government introduced the Smokefree legislation to protect individuals against exposure to second-hand smoke and the associated health risks. These include cancers, heart disease and up to 600 premature deaths a year. In Scotland, where the legislation was introduced a year earlier, admissions to hospitals by people suffering cardiac-related illness has been reduced by 17% - a far greater reduction than could have been achieved through other measures.
The introduction of the Smokefree legislation has, however, resulted in an increase in the amount of cigarette litter on the streets in the district. Dropping cigarette butts is an offence under the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2005 and can result in a fine of £75. Adur Distrct Council are giving away personal ashtrays to help smokers dispose of their cigarettes correctly. These are being issued on a first come, first served basis.
