Homelessness
- The level of homelessness in the district remains a concern with 403 applications being made in 2000 / 2001.
- There were 222 homeless households in temporary accommodation at March 2001.
- 27% of those presenting themselves as homeless were young single people.
- 67% of applications were deemed as a priority because there were dependent children or where a member of the household was pregnant.
- 13% were vulnerable as a result of old age, physical or mental illness
- Main cause of homelessness accounting for 40% of applications was loss of rented accommodation.
- Second most common cause of homelessness representing 38% was as a result of parents and relative / friends being unable to accommodate.
- 2% because of rent / mortgage arrears.
- 12% was as a result of breakdown in relationship.
- 14% were single homeless.
Housing Benefit
- 33% of Adur Council Tenants are claiming full housing benefit.
- and a further 26% claiming part benefits.
- 65% of benefit claimants are female.
Housing demand and affordability
- House prices have risen 35% in 2 years on average, according to Land Registry Statistics.
- Affordability has become one of the most important factors affecting Housing need in the area. Prices having risen 25.5% in one year are now beyond the range of most first time buyers.
- Average price of a 2 bedroom house for sale in the district was £99,350 in 2000 (35% increase in 2 years).
- 917 Household were registered as being in Housing need to one degree or another = approx. 4% of households in the area at the end of March 2001
- The projected requirements for affordable housing in Adur to 2006 are
estimated at some 1,530 properties as follows :
- Older people = 289.
- Younger single persons / couples = 241.
- Families = 1,000.
- The Council has sold off 1,775 houses since 1982 representing 37% of public housing stock sold off in the last 20 years.
- From 1993 to date Adur has facilitated provision of 417 affordable homes at an average of 52 per year. This represents 55% of the total completions in all tenures. However, because of the Right to Buy, the council has sold off the equivalent of 88 council houses per year every year for 20 years thus reducing the number of affordable homes made available for the community.

- There is a proposed target of 1,740 new dwellings in the district to be built between 2001- 2016.
- The age distribution of the stock 1920 - 1940 means that potentially more will become unfit.
- 36% of the population lives alone.
- 30% of houses in the district have single occupancy.
