Totals and growth :
- Adur's population is estimated at 59,300 (taken from the mid year estimates 2001, DETR).
- Adur's population is growing at around 0.50% per annum and is likely to increase by 5% between 1996 and 2006.
- Population Projections predict an 8% increase in the number of people aged 55-74 and an increase of 13% in the number over 74 in next ten years.
- Adur residents fall into the following age categories :
- 0-15 : 17.7%.
- 15-64 : 60%.
- 65+ : 22%.
- 85+ : 2.9%.
- Adur's Population is an ageing population (a demographic 'time bomb'). Population projections predict an 8% increase in the number of people aged 55-74 and an increase of 13% in the number over 74 during the next ten years.
- In Adur both 0-14 and 15-34 year age categories are projected to decrease between 2001 and 2011. In the 35-64 group, the male and female resident population is expected to rise by 2.9% and 1.2% respectively and in the 65+ age category the resident population is expected to rise 8.1%.
- 8.5% of residents in Adur are over the age of 65 and live alone. The projection for Adur is that this section will increase by over 8%.
- The predicted rise in 65+ age group will have an impact on the provision of primary health care services.
- The predicted fall in the overall percentage of residents in the younger age categories has social implications in that many sections of employment such as education and nursing are heavily reliant on recruiting young people.
Breakdown of Population :
- Ethnic minorities make up just over 1% of the population well below the national average.
- Approximately 14% of Adur's Population has long term disability.
- Over 25% of the population is of retirement age.
- 28% of pensioners have long term limiting illness.
- 18% of pensioners do not have central heating.
- Adur has a high level of single women living on their own, many of them elderly.
- Adur has a high level of single parent families.
- Many of the most vulnerable people in our society live in areas of multiple deprivation.
- Adur's population is an ageing population.
Families and pregnancy :
- Adur has the 2nd highest percentage of lone parents in the county at 3.9% of the population.
- Adur has the second highest under 18 conception rate in the county. The rate was higher than the average for the whole of the South-East but lower than the national average.
- Adur has highest number of teenage pregnancies in the county apart from Crawley (41 per 1,000) but is below national average of 44 per 1,000.
- Adur has the highest infant mortality rate in the county at 5.4.
- Adur has the highest perinatal mortality rate in the county nearly double the county average and 80% higher than the national average.
Income :
- Mean Income for Adur is £20,400 (1999) just below the national average of £21,365.
- Unemployment is the highest in West Sussex.
- Year on year, unemployment levels have fallen from 1.7% in July 2000 to 1.4% in May 2001.
- 60+ income support rate fell from 11.3% to 10.3% a 10% drop between 1995 - 1998.
- Disability claims rose between 1995 and 1998 by 12.5%.
- 65% of claimants on benefits are women.
- But those over 60 claiming Income support fell by 10% between 1995 and 1998.
- Those with children under 16 claiming Income Support fell by 24% between 1995 and 1998 from 23.1% to 17.1%.
- Lone Parents claiming Income Support fell by 15% between 1995 and 1998 from 2.9% to 2.5%.
- The numbers claiming Income support / Job Seekers Allowance have fallen from 9.8% in 1995 to 7.8% in 1998.
- Those claiming unemployed Income Support have fallen from 3.8% in 1995 to 1.3% in 1998 of population.
- Those claiming Lone Parent Income Support have fallen from 2.9% in 1995 to 2.4% in 1998.
- Those claiming Disabled and other Income Support rate rose from 2.4% in 1995 to 2.7% in 1998 (in line with national figures).
- 60 and over Income Support rate fell from 11.3% in 1995 to 10.3% in 1998.
- Children under 16 (in families claiming) fell from 23.1% in 1995 to 17.1% in 1998.
- 30% of the population do not have a car.
Health :
- 28% of the Adult population smoke (13,000).
- Cancer is the single biggest killer is Adur yet there are no cancer treatment centres in West Sussex.
- 1991 Census shows that 15% of Adur residents had a long term limiting illness. This figure has probably grown.
Schools and education :
- Adur has 7,035 registered pupils, a 5% increase since 1996.
- Adur is most educationally deprived area in the whole of West Sussex.
- Adur has the lowest number of University acceptances in the whole county.
Social hardship :
- Adur has the second highest percentage of lone parents in the whole of West Sussex.
- Adur has the highest number of wards registered as being multiply deprived (25%) of the county's worst 20 wards.
- For Health deprivation seven wards within Adur have been rated within the top 20 most deprived wards in West Sussex.
- It is important to recognise that pockets of deprivation within an otherwise affluent area are less likely to be recognised and dealt with effectively.
- 7,489 (13%) of Adur population living at home with a long - term disability.
- 50% of queries to CAB in 2000 were on Housing and homelessness consumer and credit and welfare benefits.
- 40% of CAB visitors do not have a car and stated that walking was their main means of getting about.
- Transport accessibility and costs appeared restrictive for most clients although distances involved were not great difficulties because of disabilities frailness and or age were all recorded.
- Health and Disability Deprivation Indices produced by West Sussex Health Authority show seven wards falling into the category in Adur. Two from Lancing and five from Sompting.
Births :
- Adur has the lowest life expectancy rate other than Arun in the whole
of West Sussex at 79.6 compared with Mid Sussex at 81.4.
- St Mary's has a life expectancy of 74.8 years and this is lower than for most other wards.
- Eastbrook also has a relatively low life expectancy of 76.4 years.
- Marine and Buckingham have much higher life expectancies.
- Adur has the highest infant mortality rate in the county at 5.4 compared to 3.4.
- Adur has a higher overall percentage of mothers smoking ten or more cigarettes per day than any other local authority in the county.
- Although the birth rate in West Sussex has remained at 8,000 per annum a number of important changes have an impact on maternity services.
- The average age at which mothers give birth has increased dramatically with a substantial rise in the proportion of mothers giving both in their 30's and 40's.
- The increase in the number of caesarean has increased from 9% in 1980 to 22% in 1998.
- Infant mortality rate for West Sussex has declined constantly from 12 per 1,000 live births to four per 1,000 live births, The West Sussex rate has been consistently below the national average.
- Perinatal mortality rates in West Sussex have increased from six per 1,000 births to eight per thousand births by 1999. However this trend needs to be interpreted in the light of the change of definition of stillbirths in 1993.
- Adur has the highest Perinatal mortality rate in the county nearly double the county rate and 80% higher than the average for England and Wales.
- Adur had the second highest under 18 conception rate in the county per thousand female 15-17. The rate was higher than the average for the whole of the South-East but lower than the national average.
Deaths :
- A relatively high percentage 24.5% of deaths in Adur were the result of cancer (lung cancer features significantly) and this is higher than the West Sussex average of 23.7%.
- 18.6% of deaths were attributed to coronary heart disease higher than the county average of 17.8%.
- Respiratory diseases cause a further 12% of all deaths.
- Circulatory diseases represented 10.6% per thousand in Adur is approx. 14% higher than the county average of 101 per 100,000.
- Adur has the second lowest accident mortality rate in the county.
- Adur and Arun both have higher than county or national average suicide rates at 10 per 100,000.
- 20% of all deaths in the county are from coronary heart disease.
- The Standardised Mortality Ratio (SMR) for Ischaemic heart disease is significantly higher than the rest of West Sussex as a whole and is close to the national average. The SMR for Adur is the highest for L/A's in the county and amounts to 200 deaths per year.
- It is estimated that 28% of the adult population smoke in Adur (13,000 people).
- Cancer is the single most common cause of death in West Sussex.
- 1 in 3 people will develop cancer in their lifetimes.
- 1 in 4 will die from the disease.
- There are currently no cancer centres in West Sussex. A complex system of three separate cancer networks and a number of specialist centres serve Adur's population.
