Introduction - Get fit. Look fit. Be fit.
Adur Health Walks will take you on a journey to a new you! Come along and join in the fun. This new programme offers walks to suit all levels of fitness.
'Take
a step' is free. You will meet new people and enjoy the fresh air.
The best tonic of all is getting that oxygen into your lungs! All you need
to do is turn up ten minutes before the start. You will be required to fill
in a Health walks questionnaire to initially register and to provide insurance
cover (see questionnaire below).
Trained leaders will be there to lead you on interesting walks through the local countryside, by the sea or passed places of interest.
There are three levels of walks :
Blue
walks = gentle stroll :
If you haven't done much walking before try the BLUE walks to GET GOING. This will involve a shorter distances and easier terrain.
Yellow
walks = longer distance :
If you feel you can do further distances try the YELLOW walks and KEEP GOING.
Green
walks = a challenge :
Finally if you like a challenge go for the GREEN walks and you can GO ON AND ON! like Forest Gump!
By the end of the walk you should feel relaxed refreshed, re energised and revitalised ... and ready to put your feet up ... until the next time!
So come along and enjoy the sights sounds and smells of the great outdoors.
See the walks programme details below.
Adur Health Walks Scheme training days
Would
you like to join a happy band of volunteers to lead walks for the new Adur
Health Walks Scheme?
If so training days will be run twice a year in Adur (and also may be offered in other councils nearby). The next training day in Adur will be added here when details are known. On the training days lunch and refreshments will be provided and the training is FREE. More dates will be added here when known - watch this space!
They are run under the auspices of the Walking for Health Initiative (see their website at www.whi.org.uk). This is a great organisation which has trained over 31,000 volunteer leaders in the past eight years.
Please note that if you are interested in attending a training day you must register beforehand, you can't just turn up on the day.
If you would like to train to lead walks in Adur, or know someone who might be interested, please contact Liz Timmer, Health Walks Leader for more information (see contact details).

Outdoor Health Questionnaire and an explanation of its purpose
The
Outdoor Health Questionnaire is the main tool by which the Walking the Way
to Health scheme can evaluate the benefits of walking. A database has been
established to collect information from the form which can then be shown
to policy makers, health professionals and the public what has been achieved.
Parts A and B can be filled in at the beginning of a walk as it is an essential aspect of leading a safe walk and part C at the end which is important for monitoring who the walks are reaching and whether walkers are 'active' or 'inactive'
This form has to be filled in only on the first occasion of taking part in a health walk.
It has been created in consultation with the National Institute for Clinical Excellence. This type of information will enable the WHI to report its success to government and to ensure that funding for health walks continues into the future.

zoom in on the UK or the part of the world you are interested in (using the tools in the map panel) and then plot your walk by double clicking on the map to plot points on your route - it will then tell you how long your route is. - Walkit
website (www.walkit.com) :
you can input a UK start location or postcode and a UK finish location or postcode (and a mid route point - ignore that it says London in the top pull down menu), choose a direct or less busy route and it will then give you a map and directions and it will also give you distance and calorie burn and how much CO2 you have avoided creating. - Via
Michelin website (www.viamichelin.com/viamichelin/int/tpl/hme/MaHomePage.htm) :
zoom in on the UK or the part of the world you are interested in, enter the start and finish points of your route and then in the 'driving directions' section select the ‘pedestrian’ option and then click search. - Journey On : Walking route planner in Brighton and Hove (www.journeyon.co.uk/walking.asp)
