Adur Healthy Walkers will take you on a journey to a new you! Come along and join in the fun. This new programme offers walks to suit all levels of fitness.
Adur Healthy Walkers is free. You will meet new people and enjoy the fresh air.
The best tonic of all is getting that oxygen into your lungs!
All you need to do is turn up ten minutes before the start. You will be required to fill in a Health walks questionnaire to initially register and to provide insurance cover (see questionnaire below).
Trained leaders will be there to lead you on interesting walks through the local countryside, by the sea or passed places of interest.
There
are four different levels of walk depending on your ability :
Blue
walks = a gentle stroll - takes about 1 to 1.5 hours:
If you haven't done much walking before try the BLUE walks to GET GOING. These involve shorter distances and easier terrain.
Click here to read Blue walks descriptions (.PDF 169kb)
Yellow
walks = longer distance - takes about 1.5 to 2 hours:
If you feel you can do a bit longer distance try the YELLOW walks and KEEP GOING.
Click here to read Yellow walks descriptions (.PDF 193kb)
Green
walks = a challenge - takes about 2 to 3 hours:
Finally if you like more of a challenge go for the GREEN walks and you can GO ON AND ON like Forest Gump! These are longer distances over a wider range of terrain and up on The Downs.
Click here to read Green walks descriptions (.PDF 197kb)
By the end of the walk you should feel relaxed refreshed, re energised and revitalised ... and ready to put your feet up ... until the next time!
So come along and enjoy the sights sounds and smells of the great outdoors.
See the programme details - diary of dates (below).

Outdoor Health Questionnaire and an explanation of its purpose
The
Outdoor Health Questionnaire is the main tool by which the Walking the Way
to Health scheme can evaluate the benefits of walking. A database has been
established to collect information from the form which can then be shown
to policy makers, health professionals and the public what has been achieved.
Parts A and B can be filled in at the beginning of a walk as it is an essential aspect of leading a safe walk and part C at the end which is important for monitoring who the walks are reaching and whether walkers are 'active' or 'inactive'
This form has to be filled in only on the first occasion of taking part in a health walk.
It has been created in consultation with the National Institute for Clinical Excellence. This type of information will enable the WHI to report its success to government and to ensure that funding for health walks continues into the future.

Stride Out for parents
Would your school like to be involved in a new walking
initiative to boost health and fitness?
A successful Stride Out group has been running since spring 2010 from a school in Shoreham.
The walks are led by a parent of the school who attended a Volunteer Health Walks Leader Training Day . The training is FREE.
The routes are brisk, purposeful and cover a distance of two to three miles and they take 45 minutes to one hour. The walks start at approx 9.a.m from the school gate, Monday and Wednesday but the day could be set to suit the parents and the leaders availability.
If you are interested in attending the next training day in 2011 please call (01273) 411203 to register.
Further information on walking for health can be found at

About the Adur area
The
Adur District covers an area between the South Downs and the coast and lies
between Worthing and Brighton & Hove. Towns in the district include Shoreham-by-Sea,
Southwick, Lancing, Sompting and the smaller areas of Coombes, Fishersgate,
Kingston by Sea (or Kingston Buci).
The north of the Adur District falls within the newly formed South Downs National Park and many of our walks are in this area of outstanding natural beauty. There are also three Local Nature Reserves (LNR) within the Adur District which include: Mill Hill LNR, Lancing Ring LNR and Shoreham Beach LNR.
Other long distance routes pass through the district include:
- The Monarch’s Way (a 615-mile (990 km) long-distance footpath in England that approximates the escape route taken by King Charles II in 1651 that runs from Worcester to Shoreham-by Sea after being defeated in the Battle of Worcester)
- The South Downs Way which runs for 99 miles (160 km) from Winchester in Hampshire, to Eastbourne in East Sussex
- The Coastal Link runs from the coast all the way to Guildford via Horsham and links with The Downs Link which is a 36.7 mile (58.7 km) footpath and bridleway linking the North Downs Way at St. Martha's Hill in Surrey with the South Downs Way near Steyning in West Sussex and then on via the Coastal Link to Shoreham-by-Sea.
The Adur District also includes places of interest such as Shoreham Old Fort, Shoreham Tollbridge, Shoreham Port, Shoreham Airport, RSPB Wildfowl Reserve, Widewater Lagoon and the River Adur. There are also numerous historic churches to visit.

If you want to plan a route to walk to the Adur Civic Centre the postcode is BN43 6PR.
- Walk Jog Run
website : route planner (www.walkjogrun.net) :
allows you to input your start location by postcode (or zoom into the map to the right area). If you then click on 'create a route' , you can click out the route you want to take on the map, it then tells you how far it is, how long it will take (you can set your walking pace) and how many calories you will use. - Weight
loss resources website : Walking Route Map Planner (www.weightlossresources.co.uk/exercise/walking/route-map.htm) :
zoom in on the UK or the part of the world you are interested in (using the tools in the map panel) and then plot your walk by double clicking on the map to plot points on your route - it will then tell you how long your route is. - Walkit
website (http://walkit.com/cities/london/) :
you can input a UK start location or postcode and a UK finish location or postcode (and a mid route point - ignore that it says London in the top pull down menu), choose a direct or less busy route and it will then give you a map and directions and it will also give you distance and calorie burn and how much CO2 you have avoided creating. - Via
Michelin website (www.viamichelin.com/tpl/hme/MaHomePage.htm) :
zoom in on the UK or the part of the world you are interested in, enter the start and finish points of your route and then in the 'driving directions' section select the ‘pedestrian’ option and then click search. - Journey On : Walking route planner in Brighton and Hove (www.journeyon.co.uk/walking.asp)
