Brown signs / Brown tourist signs
Brown
signs are provided mainly to direct visitors to their intended tourist destination
towards the end of their journey. Standard symbols are sometimes used on these
signs. They illustrate different types of attraction or facility.
There is a national system operated by the Highways Agency which determines whether you are eligible for brown signs on the national trunk road network. Your local highway authority (West Sussex County Council) controls signs on the local roads in its area and sets local policy on brown signs.
Charges for tourist signing
The fee structure relating to tourist signs, more commonly known as brown signs (or sometimes 'brown tourist signs'), hasn’t been reviewed in West Sussex since 1998.
A review has now taken place. As of April 18th 2008 the revised fee structure for West Sussex County Council Tourist Signing will be :
- £100 non-refundable application fee
- £65 design per sign
- £130 site inspections and proposals consultation
- £130 administration
Implementation of the revised scale of charges will bring West Sussex County Council (WSCC) more into alignment with charging practices held by neighbouring authorities in that actual cost will be covered by the tourist industry.
It is also proposed that these fees be maintained until the next review, and that subsequent reviews should take place at no more than three yearly intervals.
The County Council is to undertake a review of its general tourist signing policy as a whole (focussing primarily on eligibility issues) at the earliest opportunity. This review is currently anticipated to be completed by March 2009.
