By Direct Debit
You
can now choose to pay your rent and service charges by Direct Debit. No more
queuing, no need for cash, debit cards or rent swipe cards.
Why not switch to the safe, smart and easy way to pay?
What is Direct Debit?
A Direct Debit gives the council permission to take money from your bank account in agreed amounts at agreed times. You will be given at least 10 days notice if any changes are made, and you can cancel at any time.
It's simple - complete the form and we will send your details to your bank to set up.
It's convenient - If you choose to pay on a weekly basis, payments will come out of your bank account each Tuesday. If you choose to pay on a monthly basis, payments will come out of your bank account on the first Monday of each month. It's secure - the Direct Debit guarantee protects all your payments.
It's efficient - and the money we save can be put back in to improve services.
When we receive your form, we'll take your bank details and set up your Direct Debit. We'll send you a confirmation letter that includes a copy of the Direct Debit guarantee. We'll also give you at least ten working days notice of the amounts that will be debited from your bank account. You should continue to make payments as shown on your rent statement until you receive the confirmation letter telling you that the Direct Debit is set up.
How to request a Direct Debit instruction form
- Download a Direct Debit form:
- The Direct Debit form can be obtained from and returned to any of the council offices. Rent payments should be maintained until your Direct Debit payments have started. You will be advised in writing of the first payment date.
Your guarantee with Direct Debit
If you choose to pay by Direct Debit, all your payments are covered by this guarantee. This guarantee is offered by all banks and building societies that take part in the Direct Debit scheme. The efficiency and security of the scheme is monitored and protected by your own bank or building society. If the amounts to be paid or the payment dates change, we will notify you 10 working days in advance of your account being debited or as otherwise agreed. If an error is made by us, or your bank or building society, you are guaranteed a full and immediate refund from your branch of the amount paid. You can cancel a direct debit at any time by writing to your bank or building society. Please send us a copy of your letter.
Electronic Payments on-line
You
can make a payment on-line using our secure payments form.
On the payments form you will be asked for your 'Account Ref.' - here you will need to type in your tenancy number (your tenancy number is a 10 digit number starting with 902).
Please make sure you have your tenancy or account reference number to hand before going into the payments form.
Please make sure you have the relevant information before making a payment:
By Standing Order
You can instruct your bank to pay by Standing Order on a date that is convenient to you, i.e. the date that you get paid. Please contact your Local Office for the Council’s bank account details so you can advise your bank accordingly. This arrangement is solely between you and your bank.
Please make sure you have the relevant information before making a payment:
In a Post Office or PayPoint Outlet (by Payment Card)

You
can pay your account with a payment card at any Post Office or PayPoint outlet
in the country.
Payments at the Post Office can be made by cash, debit card or cheque. Cheques should be payable to “Post Office Ltd”.
PayPoint outlets always accept cash payment, but card and cheque payments are at the discretion of the individual PayPoint outlet. Cheques should be made payable to the outlet in the name they advise.
The single card can be used for three types of payment. When making payment you must tell the operator the type of charge you wish to pay, Housing Rent, Council Tax or Garage Rents. You can pay more than one option during the same visit, but must tell the operator how much you are paying against each.
If you lose your card you must let us know at your Local Office:
- for Southwick and Shoreham (01273) 263370
- for Lancing and Sompting (01273) 236680
- or the Civic Centre Help Point (01273) 263000
We will arrange for a new card to be issued to you as soon as possible. A charge may be made.
