Shoreham man convicted of benefit fraud
Ref : 06/099 : Date : 19-10-2006
A Shoreham man pleaded guilty at Worthing Magistrates Court on Monday (16/10/06) to housing benefit fraud. Adur Council prosecuted Carl Ramshaw, 36, of Nicolson Drive in Shoreham. He had claimed £220 fraudulently by knowingly giving the council false information.
The court heard that Mr Ramshaw had failed to tell the council that he had someone else living at his address. Most of this overpayment has now been paid back to the council.
The offence came to light as a result of information given to the council by a housing association and co-operation between the police and trading standard officers.
Mr Ramshaw was sentenced to a one year conditional discharge and ordered to pay the councils prosecution costs of £545.00.
Housing and Central Services Chairman, Julie Searle said: If members of the public know of, or suspect someone of claiming benefits they are not entitled too, they can advise the benefits office in confidence. This is council tax payers money they are stealing.
To report suspected fraud call 01273 263487/263488, or call the National Benefit Fraud Hotline on 0800 854 440.
