Adur Council wins national recycling award
Ref : 06/111 : Date : 27-11-2006
Adur
Council has scooped a silver recycling award in the National Green Apple
Awards 2006.
The
award was for work undertaken during the Waste and Resources Action Programme
(WRAP) project to increase recycling rates and inform residents about waste
minimisation.
Recycling increased by three per cent going from 20 per cent at the beginning of the project to 24 per cent by the end of the project. This showed that the campaign was a success and achieved its objectives.
The project specifically targeted non-recyclers and encouraged them to take part in recycling activities through various communication methods.
In addition, recycling schemes for flats were expanded to help increase uptake. Throughout the project, the Adur Recycling Volunteers became the local focus helping officers with all parts of the campaign.
Particular emphasis was placed on the interaction between residents and officers through the recycling volunteer group and face to face communication.
Key messages were communicated to residents by roadshows, talks, door to door canvassing, leaflets, newsletters and posters. To encourage more recycling a competition to find the best recycler took place every week.

Community and Leisure Services Committee Chairman, Keith Dollemore, said : "It's always good to have our services recognised by others. The recycling volunteers have shown such fantastic commitment and their support and help has led to us achieving both this award and an increase in recycling."
Green Apple Awards are well established as one of the major environmental recognition schemes, both in the UK and internationally.
