Sussex County Council press release :
Sompting waste site to close in December
(Civic amenity site, Halewick Lane, Sompting)
Press Release Number : PR1184 : Date : 15 December 2006
Information
As promised by West Sussex County Council, Sompting Wastes Management Complex, which includes the Household Waste Recycling Site, will cease operating on Sunday, December 31 when its planning permission expires and will not re-open.
However, within a three-mile radius of Sompting, there are two alternative Household Waste Recycling Sites - one at Brighton Road, Shoreham, the other at Dominion Way, Worthing (see links below at end of news release for more details of these two alternative Household Waste Recycling Sites).
Both sites accept all household waste, including soil and hardcore, glass bottles and jars, household appliances, fridges and freezers, scrap metal, gas bottles, all types of batteries, used lubricating oil, green garden waste, mixed paper and card, tyres and textiles.
Shoreham also accepts cement-bonded asbestos, which for health and safety reasons, must be double wrapped in clear plastic before disposal.
The Waste Transfer Station and the Materials Recycling Facility will also close. Alternative arrangements are being made for the bulking of recyclables and disposal of waste collected from your home by Adur and Worthing Services.
These temporary arrangements will be in place until the opening of the new Lancing Waste Transfer Station, which is currently under construction.
Completion of this facility is programmed for the end of March 2007. As a result, there may be some variation to the timings of your kerbside collections in the interim period.
Your collections will still occur on the same day. However, the actual time of day they are made may alter. Adur and Worthing Services would like to thank you in advance for your patience and cooperation during this period.
Henry Smith, Leader of West Sussex County Council, said: "The new Lancing Transfer Station is being provided as part of 'Reclaim West Sussex' the 25 year Recycling and Waste Handling Contract between the County Council, the District and Borough Councils and Viridor Waste Management.
"At the present time, a high recycling rate of 32% is already being achieved but the target is to achieve 45% by 2015. To attain this there is a need to provide new and improved facilities across the county."
When the Sompting site closes for the acceptance of waste, there will still be some activity connected with the clearance of materials and plant, followed by further work to clean up the site to the satisfaction of the Environment Agency.
Concerning the site's future, the decision endorsed by Mr Smith earlier in the year was to consider future uses of the site for light commercial use or some form of site restoration, subject to those options being thoroughly tested through Adur District's Local Development Framework.
The County Council's Property Services is pursuing feasibility and option appraisals in this respect in discussion with Adur District Council.
