No butts about it
Ref : 07/033 : Date : 20-03-2007
With just 100 days to go before the smoking ban in public places comes
into force on July 1 2007 Adur Council is offering pubs and restaurants in
Adur the chance to have a free cigarette butt and gum bin.
The stylish bins come ready to install and there’s a limited number available. Businesses who take up this offer will have to install and empty their bins. People can also buy their own personal ashtrays which they can carry with them.
The council wants to encourage people to dispose of their butts responsibly and keep Adur’s streets clean. Many people may not realise but dropping butts is a littering office and liable to a fine of £75.
The council is employing a temporary member of staff whose job it will be to educate and advice on the smoking ban and if necessary carry out enforcement action on businesses that fail to comply with the new regulations.
The council wants to take a proactive stance. Community and Leisure Services Chairman, Keith Dollemore said: “We want to keep litter off our pavements and the more pubs and restaurants that provide somewhere for people to stub out, the less cigarette waste we will have on Adur’s streets.”
The smoking ban comes into force on July 1 this year, but many pubs and restaurants have already become smokeless zones such as Tosca.
Enver Godanci from Tosca said: “This restaurant has been smoke free since we opened over two years ago. It was a risk at the time – but it’s paid off. I personally welcome the ban as I like a smoke free environment.”
