Butts, Bin it - smoking litter campaign September 2007
Ref : 07/087 : Date : 17-09-2007
Adur District Council, in partnership with West Sussex, Worthing and Arun Councils is taking part in a national Keep Britain Tidy campaign throughout September to stamp out cigarette litter.
Smoking related rubbish is now the UK’s biggest litter problem. Council officers from all four councils will be out in each district promoting the use of bins and personal ashtrays.
Adur Council will be at Shoreham Station on Tuesday 18 September giving out free personal ashtrays. Southern Railway is supporting this campaign as they have noticed that there has been an increase in cigarette related litter around stations since the introduction of the ban.
No butts - stub it out posters will be seen throughout the country on buses, bill boards and lamp posts.
The campaign starts on September 17th, for more information including details of portable ashtrays and cut price cigarette bins please visit the ENCAMS : Keep Britain Tidy website (www.encams.org/home/)
Ginette Unsworth, Senior Marketing Manager, Keep Britain Tidy said: “Cigarette litter has been a persistent problem for the past few years. It’s important that we offer smokers a suitable way to dispose of their cigarette ends.”
Jan Chaudhry, commercial director for Southern said: “Since the new legislation was introduced, cigarette butts left outside our stations have become more noticeable. We applaud Adur District Council for its action at Shoreham station today. Perhaps it will encourage station users to dispose of their cigarette ends more thoughtfully in future.”
Chairman of Community and Leisure Services, Keith Dollemore said: “It is great to be part of such a big national campaign. I really hope smokers who live, work and visit Adur take heed of the message and deal with their cigarette rubbish responsibly.”
