40 new homes for Fishersgate

Ref : 08/036 : Date : 15-04-2008

Adur Council is to go ahead with HydeMartlet housing association and build 40 new affordable homes for local people on the site of an old factory in Gardner Road, Fishersgate.

Adur Council, working with the housing association who own the site, persuaded the government to release nearly £2 million for the project. The council is also contributing £400,000.

The homes will be a mixture of shared ownership and affordable rented flats and houses. Six two storey three-bedroom houses and 34 two bedroom flats complete with car parking spaces, balconies, patios, gardens and a large communal amenity space will be built.

Contemporary design features such as differing roof heights, projecting balconies and a mixed use of materials and irregular form will add interest and variety to the street scene. The houses will have hipped slate roofs, brickwork walls and front balconies.

Money will also be allotted to West Sussex County Council to pay for extra school places and towards sustainable transport as part of the planning conditions.

HydeMartlet are about to start work and the new homes are expect to be ready to move into by January 2010.

HydeMartlet Development Director, Jackie Strube said: “We are delighted that the council and the Housing Corporation have supported this scheme which will allow us to provide much needed affordable housing for local people where house prices are still beyond the reach of those on average incomes. 28 of the 40 homes will be made available for ‘shared ownership’ which enables first time buyers on lower incomes to take their first step on the housing ladder.

Adur and Worthing’s executive head of housing, health and community safety, Paul Spedding said: “This development will be a real boost for local families who’ve struggled to get on the housing ladder, as well as being an investment in the Fishersgate community. We’re really pleased to have got the scheme of the ground.”
