Southwick’s historic conservation area under review

Ref : 08/037 : Date : 16-04-2008

Southwick GreenPeople are invited by Adur Council to comment on the conservation areas of historic Southwick.

A draft character appraisal and management plan of the area has been prepared and is now under review. The appraisal contains information about all the current conservation areas and 20 listed buildings. It also highlights areas that could be improved or developed.

Southwick dates back to the Iron Age, evidence of a settlement was discovered on the site of the Methodist Church is Manor Hall Road. Roman remains have also been discovered.

The Domesday book 1086, records Southwick as a small farming community during Saxon times. After the Norman conquest the King’s lands were confiscated and Southwick Manor was given to William de Braose. The manor was then called ‘Esmerewic’ which means the land to the east of the pond. It later became the southern part of the estate and the name changed to ‘Southwyk’.

In 1801 there were only 34 houses in Southwick with a population of 271. Now the population numbers 13,000 (figure from 2001 census).

The Southwick conservation area was originally designated in 1976, this has since been extended. It is divided into six character areas :

  • Riverside - the area facing onto Albion Street and the Riverside
  • Manor House - The area surrounding the mid to lower end of Southwick Street down to Glebe Close, Croft Avenue and the Twitten
  • Southwick Street, Southdown Road and Roman Crescent
  • The Green - The area surrounding Southwick Green
  • Church Lane - the area around Church Lane which runs between Kingston Lane and the Green
  • Waterdyke Avenue

Copies of the document and questionnaire are available online at in the Conservation section of the website www.adur.gov.uk and the Civic Centre, Southwick and Shoreham libraries. An exhibition is also on display at the Civic Centre until 22 April and thereafter at the Southwick library until 19 May 2008. The closing time for comments is 5.30pm on Monday 19 May.
