Adur and Worthing's refuse and recycling collectors with Worthing Mayor Christine BrownAdur and Worthing’s refuse and recycling collectors are smarter in more ways than one. 12 of them have just completed and passed their NVQ 2 in waste management.

Another 120 employees are expected to follow suit over the next year, making this team of professionals one of the most qualified in the country, with a 99 per cent take up on training.

'Binmen' have moved a long way since the days of "My old man’s a dustman", they are now skilled and qualified with knowledge of health and safety, dangerous substances and all the relevant legislation.

Adur and Worthing council services, operations manager, David Whitmore said: "We have been trying to raise the profile of the operatives who work in waste services. I think people will be surprised at the amount of knowledge and skill required to carry out what, to the uninitiated, would appear to be a mundane job."
