Pride of Adur and Worthing
Ref : 08/062 : Date : 28-07-2008
Adur and Worthing’s refuse and recycling collectors are smarter in
more ways than one. 12 of them have just completed and passed their NVQ 2
in waste management.
Another 120 employees are expected to follow suit over the next year, making this team of professionals one of the most qualified in the country, with a 99 per cent take up on training.
'Binmen' have moved a long way since the days of "My old man’s a dustman", they are now skilled and qualified with knowledge of health and safety, dangerous substances and all the relevant legislation.
Adur and Worthing council services, operations manager, David Whitmore said: "We have been trying to raise the profile of the operatives who work in waste services. I think people will be surprised at the amount of knowledge and skill required to carry out what, to the uninitiated, would appear to be a mundane job."
"Our
people have risen to the challenge and have shown a great interest in gaining
this qualification, which will help us to achieve our goal of delivering
a class leading service to the residents of Adur and Worthing."
