Historic port town looks to the future

Ref : 08/063 : Date : 28-07-2008

Shoreham town centreAdur District Council has completed its review of Shoreham’s historic town centre looking at the conservation area, listed and other important local buildings.

This review is the first of several to be completed in the district and sets out a range of improvements for the 11th century town. The final document includes amendments made following a period of public consultation.

People who want to know more about the conservation area can see the newly published management and character appraisal plan on www.adur.gov.uk, at the Civic Centre or libraries.

St Mary de Haura Church, at the centre of the town, was built around 1103.

St Mary de Haura churchThe town centre has 47 listed buildings, which includes the old Town Hall, The Royal Sovereign Public House and the telephone kiosk in East Street.

Several other buildings although not listed are highlighted as making a positive contribution to the towns landscape. Among these are most of the town’s pubs; the Marlipins Public House, the Ferry Inn, The Bridge and The Crown and Anchor.

The character appraisal forms the basis for developing management proposals and recommendations aimed at the preservation and enhancement of the conservation area.

The council will use the planning application process to ensure any proposed new developments or redevelopments are of the highest quality and sympathetic to the conservation area.

Proposals include measures to reduce traffic congestion and noise and improve pedestrian access on East Street and St Mary’s Road. Other improvements include reducing street clutter and encouraging owners of unsightly buildings to undertake improvements to their appearance.

Cabinet member for regeneration, Jim Funnell said: “This document provides us with good guidance and improvement ideas for Shoreham’s town centre conservation area which will ensure future developments enhance our historic port town.”
