On the summit of steep down - Lancing
Ref : 08/088 : Date : 20-10-2008
A group of adventurous children in year five at Sompting Village Primary
School will take to the hills on Wednesday morning on the 22rd of October
2008. They are undertaking a long walk to Steep Down to experience the challenge
of an extended climb.
The event is organised by Adur District Council's healthy walks leader, Liz Timmer, and the school. Their topic for this term is Rocks, Mountains and Volcanoes and their teacher, Stephen Chadwin, has been keen for them to undertake a challenge. The height of the Trig Point at Steep Down is 149 metres.
The children, who are ten years old, will wear pedometers to calculate how many steps it will take to get to the ‘summit’. They are comparing this to climbing Mt Everest which is 8848 metres!
The children will continue to wear the pedometers until they return to school so they will do more than ten thousand steps which is a great achievement.
The 'Take A Step' scheme encourages fitness through walking for health,
Liz Timmer who is the organiser of the programme said: “The children
will remember this experience for a long time and hopefully develop an interest
in exploring the local area with their family or decide to come on a Health
Walk.”
The programme of walks is available on-line on our healthy walking webpage or by post. Call Liz on (01273) 263240 for a programme or to arrange a visit to your school.
