Major part for works of art
Ref : 08/091 : Date : 27-10-2008
Works of art in public places set to be part of all major development in
Adur and Worthing. Adur and Worthing Councils are working together to produce
a Public Art Strategy and wants to know people’s views.
Once complete the strategy will become a planning document in both areas. This means that major investors in the area will be required to consider public art right from the start of their plans and will have a responsibility for working with the local community and local artists to deliver quality public art as part of site developments.
As part of the process of developing the Strategy, we want to talk to as
many interested people as possible to gather their knowledge, ideas and inspiration.
Therefore, we are hosting two public consultation meetings which are open
to everyone.
These will be held at:
- Worthing Town Hall (Council Chamber) on 11th November between 6pm and 8pm
- Lancing Parish Hall, South Street, Lancing on 18th November between 6 and 8pm
We will also be holding a separate consultation event just for young people at Northbrook College on the 25th November. We will be contacting all schools and colleges in the area to invite them to bring a delegation of enthusiastic students and their imaginations!
Public art can take many forms such as banners, flags, lighting schemes,
street furniture, fencing, paving, signs, sculptures, murals or mosaics.
The most successful public art results from a collaborative process involving
members of the local community.
Public art can be temporary - for example a special screening of a film or a projection on the facade of a building - or permanent, for example a sculpture on a roundabout, or artworks in a school or hospital, or sited along a river walk way or in a public park.
The sorts of questions we will ask at the events are:
- What does public art mean to you?
- What do you like about public art?
- What sort of public art would you like to see in Worthing and Adur?
- Do you have any ideas for themes to inspire new public art in Worthing and Adur? (e.g. literature, famous people associated with the area, music, landscape features)
- Are there any specific locations where you would like to see public art?
If you want any further information about the Strategy or the events please contact:
- the Arts Development Team at Adur District Council on 01273 263274
- or the Worthing Regeneration Team on 01903 221304.
If you can’t make it to the public meetings, go to www.worthingregeneration.com where you can give us your thoughts on-line.
