Public art - what do you think?
Ref : 08/093 : Date : 13-11-2008
Works of art in public places are set to be part of all major development
in Adur and Worthing. Adur and Worthing Councils are working together to
produce a Public Art Strategy and want to know what you think.
In developing the Strategy, we want to talk to as many people as possible to gather their knowledge, ideas and inspiration. So we are hosting a consultation meeting which is open to everyone at Lancing Parish Hall, South Street, on 18 November 2008 from 6 to 8pm.
There is also a separate consultation just for young people at Northbrook College on 25 November 2008 where all schools and colleges in the area have been invited to bring a delegation of enthusiastic students and their imaginations!
Jim Funnell (Adur) and Ann Barlow (Worthing) both cabinet members for regeneration, say: "The strategy will become an important document for both Adur and Worthing which means that major investors in the area will have to consider public art right from the start of their plans and will have a responsibility for working with the local community and local artists to deliver quality public art as part of new developments."
Public art can take many forms such as banners, flags, lighting schemes,
street furniture, fencing, paving, signs, sculptures, murals or mosaics.
The most successful public art results from a collaborative process involving
members of the local community.
Public art can be temporary - for example a special screening of a film or a projection on the facade of a building - or permanent, for example a sculpture on a roundabout, or artworks in a school or hospital, or sited along a river walk way or in a public park.
The sorts of questions we will ask at the events are :
- What does public art mean to you?
- What do you like about public art?
- What sort of public art would you like to see in Adur and Worthing?
- Do you have any ideas for themes to inspire new public art in Adur and Worthing? (e.g. literature, famous people associated with the area, music, landscape features)
Are there any specific locations where you would like to see public art?
