We Play Too! wins a very cool £50k
Ref : 08/096 : Date : 27-11-2008
The
'We Play Too!' project has just heard the fabulous news that
it has won a very cool £50,000 from the People's Millions towards installing
special play equipment for children with disabilities at Brooklands Park
in Worthing. (Brooklands Park is on the coast road just over the western
edge of the Adur District).
The 'We Play Too!' project was spearheaded by Lyn Aaron-Ferrigno and came about because her daughter Zoe, aged 5, has cerebral palsy and is unable to play in a playground with her brother and friends.
Lyn
decided to launch the 'We Play Too!' campaign to raise money to pay for
play equipment for these special children with disabilities to be installed
alongside these play areas.
Lyn, founder of 'We Play Too!', said on receiving the money: “It is absolutely fantastic and overwhelming, I am very emotional and so pleased we won. The whole community has been really good in coming together. Zoe, bless her cotton socks, has been an absolute inspiration to getting this project off the ground. However, the real work starts now.”
Bryan Turner, Cabinet Member for Clean and Green Environment (Worthing BC councillor), added: “I am thrilled by the result. I was a big fan of going down to the swings as a child and now these children will have the chance to do the same. Many thanks to all involved and to everyone who voted yesterday.”
Hazel Thorpe, Champion for Young People (Worthing BC councillor), said: “I think it is fantastic that the community has pulled together and voted for this wonderful project. It is a start of a new era for children and now all children can play together. It has certainly put Worthing on the map.”
The next stage is to raise the remaining money to fund the £75,000
fully inclusive play facility. Additional monies will come from the 'We Play
Too!' campaign and other grant applications from, for example, Viridor. Worthing
Council has already earmarked a plot of land at Brooklands Park to site the
playground.
It is anticipated that the playground will be completed sometime during Summer 2009.
The 'We Play Too!' project was featured on Meridian News last night. It is not yet known how many votes were made for the project.
Thank you to all who voted across both Worthing Borough and in Adur District!
