Opening of new play area in Southwick designed by local children

Ref : 08/097 : Date : 28-11-2008

Sonia Robinson, deputy head of Eastbrook Primary School, will be cutting the ribbon at 3.30pm on Monday 1 December to officially open the new play area at the Southwick Recreation Area in front of pupils from Eastbrook School who all had an input into the design and choice of the new equipment that best suited their needs.

The project started six months ago when Sonia and Clive Bramble from Adur council got their heads together as to how best to replace the worn out old site and decided that the more local children and parents could be involved the better the result would be.

Following assemblies in local school, site consultations and adverts on the old site fencing the user working group, called Southwick Playground Group (SPG), collated all the results and requested the council brought in Proludic play company equipment and used Matta safety surfacing underneath.

The new play area has grown and now has nearly twice as much equipment as the old site had. This has been achieved by all the local community and officers working together to finance the £95,000 project. Adur Council contributed £60,000 and an additional £35,000 came from Viridor's local landfill community tax credit funding scheme.

Further plans for the play area include a picnic area, some shady areas and a new access path - all part of future SPG plans - and a local parent who has volunteered to make one of the benches. The SPG is currently seeking other funding to pay for these further improvements.

If you would like to get involved why not join the SPG and help develop the Southwick Recreation Ground as you would like to see it. Call Clive Bramble, Group Manager Adur Watch and Parks Service on 01273 263137 or send an e-mail for more information.
