Leave it out says council leader
Ref : 08/105 : Date : 22-12-2008
People may have seen or heard a story in the press over the last week about leaves on streets in Sompting. The story published in the newspapers and on the Tax Payers Alliance website is completely wrong. We do not charge people who pick up leaves from the street.
For those interested in the truth - this is what actually happened in one phone call.
Mr Straw called the council saying he had 12 bags of leaves to be collected, he was told that would cost £43 as a bulky waste collection. Perfectly normal for a council to charge for this type of collection from a private house, just like picking up beds or old sofas. Mr Straw said he would throw the leaves back on the street in that case. Our operator then questioned where the leaves had come from - and it was only at this point Mr Straw told us from the street.
If Mr Straw had explained from the outset where the 12 bags of leaves had come from this whole totally blown up and invented story would not have existed. In fact, it wasn't even Mr Straw who contacted the press it was a neighbour who wasn't fully aware of the facts.
There was no argument or dispute and we didn't have to be harangued, persuaded or otherwise into collecting them - we just did our job.
We do not charge people for picking up leaves from the street, indeed it is kind of them to do so. We collected the said leaves within the hour and that was that. All sorted in one phone call.
