Adur councillors say 'no' to pay rise
Ref : 09/034 : Date : 22-04-2009
Adur councillors at last nights council meeting continued their drive to protect the public purse in the current economic crisis, by deciding not to take the increases in allowances recommended by an independent Remuneration Panel.
Following research into allowances paid by 39 other councils and a review of the increased workloads following the change to the Cabinet system, the independent panel had recommended a 10% increase in basic allowance plus other increase for special responsibility allowances.
Council leader, Neil Parkin, says: "Although we welcome the Independent Panel's recommendations as proper recognition of the significant time and effort spent by councillors, it would be absolutely inappropriate in these recessionary times to accept the increases."
Hot on the heels of additional resources for debt advice and postponing the our traders rent reviews, this is the Council's latest move to recognise the extraordinary financial pressures currently affecting our communities.
