Adur Council starts consultation on proposals for Pond Road, Shoreham

Ref : 09/098 : Date : 23-11-2009

Pond RoadPeople are invited by Adur Council to have their say on the proposed development options for Pond Road, Shoreham. Consultation on the proposals starts this week (23 November) and finishes on the 18 December 2009.

An exhibition of the proposals goes on display :

  • at Shoreham Community Centre until 29 November,
  • at Shoreham Library from 30 November to 6 December,
  • at the Shoreham Food Festival, Coronation Green from 8 to 12 December
  • and at the Civic Centre from 14 to 18 December.

Council officers will be available for questions at the Shoreham Centre on Wednesday 25 November from 10am to 1pm, at the library on Wednesday 2 December from 10am to 1pm and at the Food and Drink Festival on Saturday 12 December from 10am to 2pm.

For those who prefer to go online there’s a questionnaire for comments on www.adur.gov.uk/pond-road. For those without internet access at home this can be done free at the Shoreham Library and at the Civic Centre

Pond Road was highlighted in the Shoreham Renaissance strategy as being the ‘heart’ of the town centre. There are two possible options in the development brief for the site. They include a new library, health centre, Citizens Advice Bureau, community centre and up to 140 new homes built around a community square.

The differences between the options mainly refer to where the retirement homes should be and a variation in the number of homes.

  • Option A is for 60 assisted homes, 25 town houses and 55 apartments.
  • Option B is for 53 assisted homes, 18 town houses and 69 apartments.

The buildings on the site are owned by Adur District Council, West Sussex County Council and West Sussex PCT and were built in the late 1960s early 1970s. The health centre in particular is in a poor state and will need to be replaced within the next few years.

Transport and car parking arrangements are being considered carefully by the council. Although the economic climate has affected development schemes nationwide, the council and its partners want to use this time and be prepared for when the recession lifts. Once the views of the public are known and analysed, councillors will be asked to approve the brief which will inform a planning application later.
