Adur's Civic Centre lives on
Ref : 09/109 : Date : 14-12-2009
The
leadership of Adur and Worthing Councils, at their joint management committee,
did not accept the officers' recommendation to dispose of the Adur Civic
Centre.
Instead, they decided to commission a more detailed technical evaluation of the work that would be required to deal with the necessary repairs and adaptations to the Civic Centre to bring it up to a standard suitable to serve the needs of the Councils' partnership.
Leader of Adur District Council, Councillor Neil Parkin, said “I was pleased with the nature of our debate with our partner councillors. All of us agreed the importance of a civic presence in both council areas. So we will be looking jointly to see how we can prioritise and phase the necessary expenditure”.
Leader of Worthing Borough Council, Councillor Paul Yallop, added “Our partnership strategy was originally to find savings from reducing three main HQ office buildings to two and that remains the position. In Worthing we fully recognise the importance of a civic presence for both councils so we accept, that if it is financially viable, upgrading the Civic Centre in Shoreham and disposing of Portland House, as originally suggested, is still our preferred way forward”.
A joint officer/member working group has been set up and will bring forward options for refurbishing the Civic Centre in March next year.
