Ref : 10/023 : Date : 10-03-2010
School children from The Globe in Lancing have designed and made a mythical creature hatched from an egg discovered in the old Treacle Mines on the South Downs in Adur!
The project is part of Adur District Council’s contribution to the West Sussex Arts Partnership programme for the lead up to the Olympic Games in 2012.
Tate & Lyle contributed some materials to use in the building of the Treacle Creature, which was made by year six children.
The project first hatched In August 2008 at the Big Picnic on Fishersgate Recreation Ground. Chairman of Adur Council, Brian Coomber, was presented with a giant egg to symbolize the beginning of the lead up to 2012. It was planned that a creature which has a local association would hatch, then grow each year until it is fully grown by 2012 and will represent Adur in the celebrations.
The Treacle Creature will make its first appearance at The Globe assembly at 10 o’clock on the morning of 11th March 2010.
