Councils support Coastguard campaign to highlight dangers of tombstoning
Ref : 10/050 : Date : 27-05-2010
Adur and Worthing councils fully support the Coastguard campaign 'Jumping
into the Unknown' to educate and highlight the terrible dangers of
tombstoning. This follows an incident on Tuesday evening (25-05-2010) at
Shoreham Harbour when a 14 year old girl had to be airlifted to hospital
after jumping into the sea and landing in shallow waters.
John Rodway the Corporate and Public Safety Manager for Adur and Worthing Councils said: "The message is clear. Don't let alcohol, drugs or peer pressure affect your judgement. Even if you are jumping safely, children may be watching and copy your actions."
"As a seaside community we should all be aware that water depth alters with the tide; the water may be shallower than it seems, in addition submerged objects like rocks may not be visible; the shock of cold water may make it difficult to swim and strong currents can rapidly sweep people away."
"With the summer ahead of us and the prospect of fine weather the risks associated with the sea are ever present, this includes pier jumping and playing on rock groynes. Our thoughts are with the young person injured in the recent incident and we will continue to work with our local partners to promote water safety."
