First community satellite police station opens in Fishersgate

Ref : 10/057 : Date : 22-06-2010

Sussex Police logoFishersgate is to have the first community satellite police station in West Sussex thanks to Adur District Council and the police.

The High Sheriff of West Sussex, Mrs Elizabeth Bennett DL, officially opened 'the station' in Fishersgate on Friday 25 June 2010 at 12 noon.

The police have rented the former launderette, called the Meet-in-Place, from the council at a peppercorn rent. Two Police Community Support Officers will be based at the Meet-in-Place to provide a strong visible presence in the community and be on the spot to tackle any anti-social behaviour issues.

The idea behind this partnership is to engage with the people of Fishersgate promote public reassurance and reduce the fear of crime. Crime prevention and safety advice will be readily available and people can drop in and have a chat about any concerns they have in the area.

Cabinet member for health, safety and wellbeing, David Simmons said: "Once again, Adur Council and Sussex Police as partners, are leading the way by developing this innovative and exciting policing initiative. This will provide both visible and real reassurance to local people, not only helping to reduce the fear of crime, but also enhancing their quality of life by making policing once more an integral and important part of community life in the area."

Adur & Worthing's District Commander, James Asser said: "The satellite Police station is an excellent opportunity to engage with local residents and community groups placing our Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) in the heart of the community."

"This venue affords us the opportunity to seek the views of local residents on the provision of their police service and in providing our team to work with community groups and agencies in reducing crime and the fear of crime."

The Meet-in-Place will continue to be used by other organisations offering services to the people of Fishersgate.

One of these is Sussex Clubs for Young People (SCYP), a voluntary youth organisation working to ensure the development of a vibrant voluntary and community youth sector which involves, empowers and meets the needs of young people in Sussex. SCYP provide a quality activity development programme that engage and excite young people in a safe environment across the county.

Paul Myles, Chairman of SCYP, said: "We are very excited about working out of this new centre in the heart of the community and supporting our partners and the young people of Sussex."
