Local artists wanted for Splash Point boulders commission

Ref : 10/058 : Date : 23-06-2010

Local artists are invited to express their interest in turning the winning ideas of the public into engravings that will feature on the boulders at Splash Point as part of the £500,000 cultural makeover. In February, Worthing Borough Council invited the public to send ideas for the boulders based on something special about Worthing

The winning concepts were chosen by the Adur and Worthing Public Art Panel. They are:

  • A Knucker Dragon
A Sussex myth the 'knucker' (a type of wingless water Dragon) was rumoured to live in the bottomless ponds call 'Knuckerholes'. One of these was believed to be located near what is now East Worthing train station.
  • The Rosetta Stone
In 1814 Thomas Young went on his annual holiday to Worthing and took with him a copy of the Rosetta Stone inscriptions. Here he part transcribed the inscriptions.
  • Fishing
Worthing was originally a small mackerel fishing hamlet.
  • Horticulture
In Victorian times Worthing moved on from a small fishing hamlet and one of the main industries was market gardening.
  • Oscar Wilde
Wrote the Importance of Being Ernest while he was living in Warwick Street.
  • Princess Amelia's shoes and Queen Victoria's knickers
Princess Amelia lived in Park Crescent and was the youngest of King George III and Queen Charlotte's 15 children. Worthing museum has her shoes in the nationally significant costume collection. The museum is also home to a pair of Queen Victoria’s knickers.

The boulders will be used for seating around the planned water feature. Adur and Worthing's regeneration team, Worthing Arts Council and landscape designers Craft:Pegg will work local artists on the £1,200 commission.

Closing date for expressions of interest is 2 July 2010. Any artist interested should contact :
