The Government to continue to support Shoreham Harbour Regeneration Project
Ref : 10/061 : Date : 13-07-2010
The government have announced Eco Town and Growth Point funding will continue for the Shoreham Harbour Regeneration Project subject to the support, engagement and involvement of local people.
Although Eco Town funding will be half the previous levels, it does mean work can carry on. Welcoming the news Chairman of the project delivery group, Peter Latham said: "The project has continued to move along at no cost to Adur Council taxpayers and with the full commitment of all the partners. It is indeed good news to know we can carry on with the promise of funding and look to continue with the full engagement and support of residents and businesses."
"Even in these tough times for local and central government we can't afford to stop everything and forget the future. We need to keep momentum alive and kicking for future generations."
The three local authority partners, Adur District, Brighton & Hove and West Sussex County councils and other partners plan to seek funding for the project from other sources.
Originally money for the project came from the South-East Development Agency (SEEDA) and the Department of Communities and Local Government. Extra money has come from West Sussex County Council and Brighton & Hove Council. Adur's contribution to the project has been in managing and steering the project as well as council officer resources.
Shoreham Port have also funded their own masterplan, published earlier this month. This plan will provide a blueprint for a successful future and vital information on what land can be released for other uses within the port's own boundaries.
Work continues on transport and flood risk studies for the wider regeneration project and will inform the core strategies of Brighton & Hove and Adur councils. A strategy agreed by all the partners needs to be prepared to enable land and property in the Shoreham Harbour area to be acquired and developed as it comes on to the market in a planned and co-ordinated way.
