Southwick Beach is fabulously clean and that’s official!

Ref : 10/073 : Date : 13-08-2010

Southwick Beach looking eastSouthwick Beach has been awarded a prestigious Good Beach Award for 2010 by the UK's Marine Conservation Society.

Southwick beach, situated between Brighton and Shoreham, is predominantly a pebbled beach with sand revealed when the tide goes out, which appeals to the whole community - surfers, dog walkers, sunbathers, families and fishermen.

The modern design of Shoreham Power Station not only gives a magnificent backdrop to the beach but also provides hot water for the surfers and swimmers!

Adur cabinet member for health, safety and well-being, David Simmons, says: "We love our beaches and are very proud Southwick Beach has won this award. One of our staff - Andrew Coates, has cleaned this foreshore area for the past 4 years and although he is soon to retire, he is very pleased to have been part of the efforts which have made this such a popular beach. Adur Council have also been pleased to support the local volunteer coastguards and have been liaising with other water users to ensure that our beaches are as safe as possible for all to enjoy."

Port engineer, Tony Parker, says: "Southwick Beach provides vital protection to both the port and the village behind and Shoreham Port works hard to make sure the beach stays in good condition. We bring in thousands of tonnes of beach shingle every year to keep beach levels up and are continually repairing the groynes that help to hold the beach in place. This year we supervised the installation of a new set of concrete steps which greatly improves access opposite Carat's Cafe and helps to buttress the sea wall."

Although not life guarded there are plenty of facilities on or near to the beach - the popular Carats Café, public loos, car parking and the odd beach hut or two. And of course the beautiful beach itself!

  • Photocall opportunity with the local beach community - everyone welcome
10am on Tuesday 17 August 2010 on Southwick Beach in front of Carats Café in Basin Road South.
