Community Planning - Local Government Act 2000

Adur District Council has signed a Statement of Intent to work in partnership with West Sussex County Council on the production of a community strategy for Adur to promote the social, economic and environmental well being of the district and to promote sustainable development in the UK.

The Government recognises that there are many service providers from the public, private, business and voluntary sectors all providing services to the community. Unfortunately, to date, there has been little co-ordination of these services sometimes resulting in over-lap and duplication. One of the requirements of the above Act is for the local authority to engage with all of the service providers throughout the district, in its leadership role and instill a sense of joint understanding and commitment amongst all providers to share a vision of what Adur would be like if we planned our services better, if we pooled resources and effort, if we shared a vision of a 'better Adur' and all agreed to play a part in achieving that vision.

Much work is being done 'behind the scenes' at the moment to pave the way forward. Our next objective is to set up a Local Strategic Partnership (LSP) made up of representatives from all the above groups and businesses who have the ability to commit resources, a willingness to work in partnership with others to achieve a better quality of life for the people of Adur.

All of the consultation undertaken over the last few years is helping to identify issues that are important to the people of Adur and this will be on-going. More work will then be done through the LSP to help identify how these can be addressed, by whom and when. Obviously, some things will be impossible, some things may take a little longer to achieve but there will of course be areas that can be progressed more quickly.

The Community Strategy will not be the Council's Strategy alone. It will be owned by the community, for the community and we will play our part to the best of our ability.
