Public Service Agreement (PSA)

The Government and Local Government Association (LGA) have agreed a set of seven shared priorities for local government. The priorities will focus the efforts of Government and councils for improving public services. The publishing of the shared priorities fulfils a commitment made in the White Paper - Strong Local Leadership - Quality Public Services.

The National Public Service Agreement for local government seeks to ensure that central government, local councils and other organisations work together as effectively as possible to secure tangible improvements in the services that matter most to local communities.

To this end, Adur District Council has recently entered into a separate local Public Service Agreement with all the other councils in West Sussex, the details of which appear below. This Agreement more accurately reflects the specific needs and aspirations of the people of West Sussex.

The work undertaken by this council is in full recognition of both the national and local government agendas.

West Sussex Public Service Agreement

In March 2003, the county council and all the district and borough councils in West Sussex entered into a public service agreement with the government with the intention of further improving the services provided to local people.

The agreement has been reached in collaboration with members of the West Sussex Strategic Partnership representing businesses, public, private and voluntary sector organisations, the police, the health authority and many more from across West Sussex.

It is the intention of all the members of the partnership to work together to achieve the improvements referred to in the agreement between April 2003 and March 2006.

The agreement contains eleven key performance targets to work towards over this period relating to education, health and social services, drug misuse, transport and road safety, crime reduction, fire safety, community participation and cost effectiveness. Each have 'stretched targets' attached to them that have been agreed with the government.

See the West Sussex County Council website (www.westsussex.gov.uk) for full list of initiatives included, how they will be addressed, stretched targets, how the agreement works and the incentives on offer for succeeding.
