Privacy Statement

We do not keep a database of people who send e-mails to us, or submit information on forms, or who access the website. Your details are only held if you ask us to provide you with information in the future, they are then deleted once we have replied. We do not and will not pass or sell your details to other people except with your express consent.

Adur District Council's privacy policy only extends to cover the Adur District Council web site at www.adur.gov.uk

Any external web sites that are linked to from our site are not and cannot be covered by this policy.

Cookies

Please note that the Adur DC website uses cookies to ensure that you get the best experience from our website. If you continue to use this site without changing your web browser cookie settings, we'll assume that you are happy to receive cookies set by our website. However, if you would like to, you can change your cookie settings at any time. Please refer to the information laid out below if you want to find out more:

About cookies

A 'cookie' is a small piece of text stored on your computer, phone or whatever you use to surf the Internet. We encourage you to accept the cookies our website uses as they help us to improve the user experience for you and many others.

Adur and Worthing Councils makes some use of cookies during your visit to our site.

This page lists cookies that may be used or set and shows sample data of what is set in each cookie to show that they don't contain any personal information. Not all cookies listed below would be set when you visit our website, they are only set if you visit the area of the site they relate to.

Cookies are devices which identify your computer to our webserver and personalise our website for your future use. Cookies are only used to pass information submitted by you for use on another webpage on our site (ie during a search, or when using our GIS mapping system, or when accessing an on-line database).

Cookies are stored on the computer's hard drive. They cannot access the hard drive - so a cookie can't read other information saved on the hard drive, or get a user's e-mail address etc. They only contain and transfer to the server as much information as the users themselves have disclosed to a certain web site.

A cookie will not be created to personally identify you as an individual for our purposes. Instead they may contain a number that represents your saved location used for bin collection day lookups. If you do not use the cookie, you would have to type in your postcode and select your address everytime you wanted to do a bin day lookup.

Most Internet browsers automatically accept cookies. However, you can amend your web browser's settings or preferences so that you can accept all cookies, be notified when a cookie is about to be set or to reject all cookies, but this might affect your use and the functionality of this site and some features may not work if cookies are turned off or restricted.

Types of cookies

  • Session cookies : Session cookies allow websites to link the actions of a user during a browser session (while your web browser remains open). They may be used for a variety of purposes such as remembering what a user has put in their shopping basket as they browse around a site. They could also be used for security when a user is accessing internet banking or to facilitate use of webmail. These session cookies expire after a browser session so would not be stored longer term. For this reason session cookies may sometimes be considered less privacy intrusive than persistent cookies.
  • Persistent cookies : Persistent cookies are stored on a user's device in between browser sessions (when you close your web browser and come back to it at a later time or date) which allows the preferences or actions of the user across a site (or in some cases across different websites) to be remembered. Persistent cookies may be used for a variety of purposes including remembering users' preferences and choices when using a site or to target advertising.
  • First and third party cookies : Whether a cookie is 'first' or 'third' party refers to the website or domain placing the cookie.
'First party cookies' in basic terms are cookies set by a website visited by the user - the website displayed in the URL window.
' Third party cookies' are cookies that are set by a domain other than the one being visited by the user. If a user visits a website and a separate company sets a cookie through that website this would be a third party cookie

Cookies used on the Adur DC website :

How to delete cookies, reject cookies, control cookies, or amend your web browser to either prevent cookies or give consent for cookie use

There are several options open to you here ...

We would recommend :

  • Our recommendation is that you allow the cookies set by this website as they enhance your browsing experience, give you full website functionality and also help us provide you with a better service and improve the website for the future.

Giving consent for cookie use :

  • This page informs you about the cookies that may be set by our website. Using the information provided on this page allows you to decide whether to leave your browser settings as they are and thereby give consent to cookies or to amend your browser settings so that you choose and control whether to delete, restrict or block the cookies you do not wish to accept .
  • Please feel free to apply them how you wish using the browser settings laid out in the section below (your browser settings will allow you to control cookie use not only on this website but on any website you visit depending on how you choose to set them).

Allowing temporary cookie permission :

  • Alternatively, you can set your web browser to delete cookies when you stop browsing the internet and close your web browser. This is a very useful option as it allows you to make full use of a website's functionality the cookies provide, but then automatically deletes the cookies when your browser closes meaning nothing is stored for the next time you visit the internet (this effectively gives temporary cookie permission).

However, if you do not want to receive cookies from this website :

  • You can select 'cookie settings' under the 'privacy settings' in your web browser's options, and add our domain to the list of websites you do not want accept cookies from, you can also delete individual cookies or any cookies that your browser has already stored.

However, please note that if you set your browser to refuse all cookies by default :

  • Please be aware that there will be some useful functionality on websites that either does not work or offers you only limited or restricted functionality as they require cookies to function properly.
  • You can find more information below on controlling cookies in different web browsers.

One final note :

  • The new joint Adur & Worthing Councils website will be launching in the next few months to replace the current websites and we will be looking at ways of providing cookie control on that new website. In the meantime by modifying your browser preferences, you have the choice to accept all cookies, to be notified when a cookie is set, reject all cookies or delete the cookies you don't want to keep, or delete cookies when you exit your web browser.

Controlling cookies in different web browsers :
(including how to give consent to, delete, block or restrict cookies)

The best way for you to control cookies is by using settings in your web browser. This will allow you to control all cookies on all sites you visit by changing your cookie settings just once. You will not then have to change cookie settings on every site you visit, which could be a time consuming process.

If you want to find out how to delete, block or restrict cookies please use the relevant link(s) to external websites below depending on what web browser you are using :

e-Petitions cookie

INOVEM Inclusionware products only use cookies to store user session and login data. The Adobe ColdFusion framework which generates the web pages uses a set of cookies to store session data. They contains a unique random-number ID for each visitor (no sensitive data is stored in the cookie itself).

When people login to the site login information is stored as a cookie on their computer; again that only contains a reference to the user, not any actual data about them. All of those cookies only last until the browser window is closed, unless the user has ticked the 'remember me' option on login, in which case they remain permanently - cookies are what does the 'remembering' in that case.

SNAP Surveys cookie

Some of the interactive on-line surveys we publish on our website use the SNAP software.

A cookie is sometimes set in the survey which saves a small text file, called a Cookie, on a respondent’s computer so that they will be unable to complete any further copies of the questionnaire until the cookie expires, thereby preventing multiple questionnaires from the same respondent.

Occasionally, but not very often, some of our surveys may be set up so they can be completed in several sessions (not all in one go). In this case partially complete responses are saved using cookies on the respondents computer. In this case cookies would need to be enabled to allow you to save the survey and then subsequently return at a later date or time to complete the survey on the same computer.

Snap Web:HTML questionnaires will use cookies if either:

  • you check the 'Try to drop a cookie' box in the Questionnaire Properties / Interview section. The purpose of this is to prevent multiple responses from the same computer (in this case, no personally identifiable information is held).
  • you use the Save button feature (in this case, the responses to the questionnaire to date are held which may include personably identifiable data. Both uses are essential to the functioning of the particular options and both are choices made by the questionnaire designer/publisher)

Website statistics

Why do we collect website statistics?

  • The website statistics software only gathers information about how our website is being used (eg the webpages visited, and the route(s) taken to get there).
  • The website statistics software does not collect information about you or any personal data you may enter on our site (eg it does not collect names and addresses in forms, account numbers, payment details, etc).

What do we do with these website statistics and information?

  • Using these website statistics and information we can:
    • determine which areas of the site are most heavily used
    • improve the way our website works and navigates
    • detect and fix broken links and errors
  • This helps us to improve your user journey and experience of our website making it easier for you to find things and making it more efficient for you to use.

What if I disable the website statistics cookies on my computer?

  • If you disable the website statistics cookies we will not get this valuable information about how people are using our website and what sections are being used most.
  • We will therefore find it harder to improve our website and your user experience.

We currently use the following statistics software:
