Shoreham action planning day
The Shoreham action planning day was held at The Shoreham Centre, Pond
Road on 5 March 2005 and was attended by 67 local stakeholders. The event
featured three stages; walking audits of the town centre, the identification
of problems and dreams, and solutions workshops.
The following key issues were identified by participants at the event :
Traffic and car parking :
- Insufficient parking
- Congestion in town centre
- Pedestrianise East Street
- Encourage less car use
- More cycle path networks
- Improvements to train station

Building quality and character :
- Certain buildings 'dated' and 'ugly'
- Parcel Force, Council Offices Pond Road Community Centre problem

- Traditional local building style is important
- Surrounding buildings should not dominate St Mary's Church
- Develop squares and piazzas where people can sit
- Create traffic-free interconnections between Pond Road Community
Centre and East Street

Waterfront and footbridge :
- The waterfront is an asset that could be better utilised
- Opportunity to open up views of waterfront from High Street
- Footbridge is 'ugly and narrow'
- Develop a new bridge that is 'wonderful and bright'
- New footbridge could be catalyst for waterfront improvements

Facilities, services and community :
- Lack of entertainment facilities, particularly for young people
- New facilities suggested - cinema, leisure centre, swimming pool,
jacuzzi, bowling centre
- St Mary's Church Hall could be better used for community facilities

The ideas developed at the action planning day fed directly into the Shoreham
Renaissance Strategy.
