Beach safety : Swimming beaches
Four bathing beaches have been introduced following consultations with beach users, interest groups and those with formal responsibilities for our beaches. A report was taken to Community Services Committee on 16 December 2003 and councillors resolved to move forward with the project :
The result is that from the beginning of May to the end of October inclusive,
four swimming beaches with associated signage have been designated, as shown
on the attached plans below :

Lancing : Worthing / Lancing boundary (Western Road) to Widewater lagoon
Widewater : Widewater lagoon to Beach Road, Shoreham Beach
Shoreham : Beach Road, Shoreham Beach to Kingston Beach / Shoreham Harbour entrance
Southwick : Kingston Beach / Shoreham Harbour entrance to Southwick / Portslade boundary
The
bathing areas have been marked off with red buoys and large signs (two way)
prominently placed either end of the designated areas informing visitors
that all watercraft, wind powered or motor, are excluded from these areas.
The yellow buoys, marking the 200m line, have been installed to signify the
8 knot limit.
Further new signage will be installed for the 2007 bathing season, which will be sited at popular pedestrian access points to the beaches. This will contain the usual do's and don'ts, emergency numbers, nearest car parks, toilets etc as well as a map showing the bathing beaches.

Shoreham Beach
Vegetated
shingle is an internationally rare habitat that contains such plants as Yellow
Horned Poppy, Sea Kale and Curled Dock.
These plants encourage a wealth of wildlife to the beach. This is why the area has been made a Local Nature Reserve (LNR).

Dogs on beaches / Dog free beaches
The Adur District has no dog free beaches or time controlled zones. This means that dogs are allowed on all beaches at all times of the year. However, dogs that are taken onto our beaches must be kept under strict control at all times and their owners, or the people who are in charge of the dogs, are required to thoroughly clean up after them and to use the dog bins provided.
