Clinical waste
A free clinical waste collection service is available for items such as needles, stoma bags, incontinence pads, etc. These items must not be put in your normal household waste or taken to civic amenity sites. Please telephone Adur Council (01903) 851729 for more information.
Hazardous waste
You can take small quantities of potentially hazardous household products such as those used in cleaning (solvents), gardening (pesticides - see also below) , DIY (thinners, paint), car maintenance (engine oil - see also engine oil webpage) and household batteries to the civic amenity site in Adur.
Hazardous waste and liquid waste should be taken to the Civic Amenity sites and must not be included in your domestic waste.
Important : Before taking any hazardous household waste for disposal to civic amenity sites please call West Sussex County Council Waste Management Services Unit on (01243) 777595.
Household asbestos
Small amounts of household asbestos if bonded and wrapped/double bagged can be accepted at the Shoreham Civic Amenity sites in Brighton Road, Shoreham-by-Sea. For large volumes of asbestos please contact West Sussex County Council (01243) 777595 who hold a list of approved companies that remove asbestos.

Plasterboard and Gypsum containing waste
From the 1st April 2009 new regulations mean that plasterboard and Gypsum containing waste is now only accepted in amounts of 200kg or less at the following sites: Chichester (Westhampnett), Burgess Hill and Crawley.

Building waste
Hard core, concrete, rubble etc, cannot be collected by Adur's refuse vehicles. We advise that a skip be hired from a company offering this service.
Pesticides
An EU directive implemented on 31st December 2003 removed from sale almost 10% of common garden pesticide products as they could cause environmental damage. If you have any old pesticides please use the PSD website below to check if they are legal for use and, if not, use the contact details on this page to find out how to dispose of them.

Refuse clearance
Be careful if employing a rubbish clearance, gardening or odd job company. If your waste is found dumped illegally you are still responsible for it.
Always ask to see the Waste Carrier's 'Licence of the Business' and check this with the Environment Agency, telephone 0845 333 111.
