Waste and recycling
Household refuse - wheelie bins, bins and sacks
Adur
District Council currently makes weekly household waste and recycling collections.
The council provides residents with blue boxes for recyclable materials, and also provides each household with black sacks for their household refuse. Once every 13 weeks (four times a year) the council will deliver rolls of black sacks to each household (one black sack per week).
In some cases (eg blocks of flats) the council will provide communal wheelie bins to the occupants instead of black sacks.
Note
: From 1st April 2008 the recycling and refuse service will be run
by Adur & Worthing
Council Services (AWS).
The
new collection service using wheelie bins for recycling and
refuse begins in parts of Adur in April 2008. The majority of Adur
residents will swap over to the new wheeled bin service in April 2008. However,
some residents of Lancing and Sompting will not swap to the new wheeled bins
and will remain with the current system until 2009 (dates to be finalised).

Sorting your refuse :
Your household waste must be sorted into recylable and non-recyclable items, and if you have one please remember to use your composting bin to help further reduce your waste :
Items suitable for recycling :
These must be washed out, and if possible squashed flat (we can then get more into our recycling collection vehicles and make fewer trips), and then put out in your blue box - find out more about the blue box scheme and what can be recycled. Remember : The more you can recycle and compost the less will end up in landfill sites.
Other non-recyclable household waste :
These items must be put out in the black sacks (or communal bins) provided by the council.
Putting your refuse and recycling out ready for collection :
Once sorted your household waste must be put out on the front boundary of your property close to the pavement in a clearly visible location (or in your bin store if that's where it's normally collected from) ready for collection by 6:30am on the morning of your collection day, please avoid blocking paths or other public areas - if you don't know which day it is for you then use our collection day pages to find out.
To help protect the people collecting your refuse and recycling from injury :
Please be careful how you dispose of any broken glass and sharp objects.
To help protect your local neighbourhood :
Please ensure that all items you put out for collection are put out neatly and will not be easily blown around or spread about by animals and birds.
Items not taken by the weekly collections :
Not all items can be taken by the household refuse collection teams - for more details see the following pages :
