Improvement & Development Agency Peer Review (IDeA)
There is considerable change in local government. Most local authorities are trying to work out how best to respond. The aim of the Local Government Peer Review Programme is to help councils to assess their current achievements and to identify those areas in which they are doing well and those where they need to do better.
Adur District Council commissioned the Improvement and Development Agency to undertake such a review between the 14th and the 18th October 2002.
The review team comprised :
- David Cook, Chief Executive, Kettering Borough Council
- Councillor Colin Hill West Somerset District Council
- Councillor Simon Speller Stevenage Borough Council
- Jane Burns Head of Policy and Performance, Dorset County Council
- Anne Worsley Ex Councillor
- Jan Wickham Review Manager, Improvement & Development Agency
During the week long visit, the review team met with and talked to a cross-section of elected Members and staff within the Council and also with representatives of partner organisations and the general public.
At the end of the week, the team fed back their conclusions and recommendations which the Council duly responded to.

The Council is already working on many of the issues highlighted within their report.
Any issues that are still to be addressed will be subsumed within a new Corporate Improvement Plan which is currently being put together. This will also pick up any outstanding matters that emerged from the recent staff survey, 3,600 appraisals, Investors in People, Comprehensive Performance Assessment etc. so that they may be programmed and targeted accordingly.
Further information on the Corporate Improvement Plan will be available in due course.
For any further information on the peer review, the Improvement and Development Agency's report, the proposed Corporate Improvement Plan etc please contact the Executive Office Manager.
